Fracture Care

If more pressure is put on a bone than it can stand, it will split or break. A break of any size is called a fracture. If a broken bone punctures the skin, it is called an open fracture. There are three main options for bone fractures:

• Casting or splinting
• Open reduction, internal fixation – this involves a surgery to repair the fracture. Frequently, metal rods, screws or plates are used to repair the bone, and remain in place, under the skin, after surgery.
• Open reduction, external fixation – This involves a surgery to repair the fracture and placement of an external fixation device on the limb with the fracture. This device is an external frame which supports the bone and holds it in the correct position while it is healing. Our board-qualified surgeons provide care and management for patients with most fractures.
