Independent Medical Exams (IME) occur when a physician not previously involved in a patient's care either examines a patient or reviews a patient's records to determine the cause, extent, and medical treatment of a work-related injury or other injury where liability is an issue. IMEs can also be used in disability cases. The physician will provide a comprehensive records review and will determine whether the patient has reached Maximum Medical Improvement. The physician will also make a determination as to any permanent impairments resulting from the injury after treatment and assign an impairment rating.
